A New Amazon Seller’s Journey: The Dream Vs. Reality & What to Do Next

THE DREAM

A determined entrepreneur wants to make it as a seller and picks his pilot product.

He puts it up on Amazon RIGHT AWAY, rapidly shipping in his items and flawlessly getting his listing(s) all set up.

Because it is an awesome product, more and more people find it and review it, and it steadily increases in sales until BAM, it’s a Best-Seller! He rinses and repeats, expanding the line, and more and more success comes his way.

The entrepreneur is SET, making tens of thousands of dollars per month (or more!) and getting constantly interviewed/ charging a fortune to tell others how they did it as they stand at the top getting a breathtaking view of the massive online empire they’ve built from the ground up in almost no time flat.

You’re either laughing or crying with me, right? Let’s move on to the reality…

THE REALITY

A  9-5 professional moonlights with a dream and turns it into an initial product to sell on Amazon, so they sign up for a seller account, enthusiastic and ready for success.

After they jump through MANY verification hoops (sending so many copies of their passports and bank statements they lose count), maybe even sending their product inventory to several DIFFERENT warehouses, and then, FINALLY, all is ready to go.

Prepared to HIT THE GROUND RUNNING after so many frustrating delays, they submit their first listing and… See that their listing is nowhere to be found on Amazon.

They dig through seller forums, trying to find help and a number for Amazon Seller Support… that doesn’t work, so they submit a support ticket to Amazon.

Fortunately, this time they get a clear answer, their inventory is stranded, and connecting it seems easy enough.

Feeling triumphant after connecting the inventory, they submit again…

And the listing is still nowhere to be found on Amazon…

This time they find out their primary image isn’t at least 1000 pixels and they need to fix it. So they resize the image, get the listing up and ready to sell, and…

CRICKETS.

So they spend money on Sponsored Products… Maybe a couple of initial sales… and…

CRICKETS.

They continue to hope for better sales but the only number they can count on is the $39.95 billed monthly from Amazon.

They are BAFFLED. They thought that if their product was good enough, it would attract buyers. Determined to succeed, they read the advice and edit their listing with keywords they thought were popular… and yet…

CRICKETS.
